From residue to resource: Circular economy in the poultry sector through the energetic utilization of excreted biomass.
AVIENERGY is a research project undertaken by a group of public and private stakeholders from several Spanish Autonomies, the objective of which is to promote a more efficient use of the resources available in the poultry sector by applying a strategy based on the foundations of the circular bioeconomy, allowing for a more effective use of the residues created in such activities in order to improve competitiveness and reduce their environmental impact.
Said strategy is centred around the revaluation of the excreted biomass generated in the poultry industries (such as meat or eggs production) in order to use it as an input for both renewable energy generation and the production of fertilizers. These organic residues are considered to be among the most problematic and abundant residues in the poultry sector, and the proposed solution intends to become an efficient and environmentally sustainable tool that contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gases emissions while contributing to the sector’s competitiveness.
The Project will process the poultry residues thermodynamically, combusting them in an experimental burner adapted to the characteristics of the residues, allowing for the generation of thermal energy. This energy could then be utilized to satisfy the need of heat in the industrial facilities. The ashes generated in the process will be considered as a valuable by-product that can be used directly as a fertilizer thanks to the nutrients contained in them. Moreover, the viability of the implementation of a cogeneration system will also be studied. The proposed system consists in an Organic Rankine Cycle intended to produce electric power to be used in the industrial facilities themselves, reducing the energetic dependency of the processes.
The Operational Groups, main actors of the implementation of the AEI-Agri (Agricultural European Innovation Partnership) are one of the key tools in the execution of the National Programme for Rural Development 2014-2020 in order to drive forward innovation in the agricultural, livestock and forestry sectors in the European Union. The Groups are formed by agents of different profiles, such as farmers, cattle breeders or innovation and education centres, associated with the objective of starting an innovation project to answer collectively a necessity or challenge of the sector.
